Santa Monica Complete & Partial Denture

Dentures are temporary replacements for missing teeth. They can be easily put into your mouth and taken out as well. Dentures are held in place with the help of special adhesives that will bond them to the gums temporarily. Dentures will take some getting used to and may never feel natural, but modern Santa Monica dentures are more comfortable and look more natural than the traditional dentures.

Dentures are of two types – complete dentures and partial dentures. it is up to your dentist to recommend the best one for you. Depending on whether all your teeth are going to be replaced or just a few, your dentist will suggest the best solution for your specific needs.

Dentures are the cheapest teeth replacement option available.

How do complete and partial dentures work?
Full dentures or complete dentures use a flesh colored acrylic base that fits snugly over your gums. The roof of the mouth will be covered by the base of the upper dentures. The lower dentures base will be shaped like a horseshoe. This is to ensure that the tongue can rest comfortably and in its natural position.

All dentures, whether they are complete or partial, are custom designed. The dentist will take an impression of your mouth and the dental lab will then prepare the dentures that fit into your mouth and are according to your specific dental proportions.

Partial dentures have a metal framework that will be attached to the neighboring healthy teeth. At times, crowns may be placed on the natural teeth to serve as strong anchors for the partial dentures. Partial dentures are almost similar to bridges, but unlike bridges which are permanent and can be removed only by a dentist, the partial dentures can be removed by the patient.

How long will it take to get used to dentures?
Dentures will definitely take a while to get used to, especially because of the acrylic base and the metal framework. They may actually feel somewhat uncomfortable during the first few weeks. You will need to learn how to eat and speak with the dentures in place. The dentures may feel bulky in your mouth or you may feel that it is about to come loose, but give it some time till your cheeks and tongue learns to hold the dentures in place. Patients also experience some soreness, minor irritation and soreness during the initial few weeks.

Tips for caring for your dentures
Dentures will need to be periodically relined and rebased. Over time, your mouth may change its shape and the dentures can loosen. Adjustments must be made for that. Here are a few tips to care for your dentures:

  • Stand over a folded towel or carpet while handling dentures. they are quite delicate and may break if you drop them on a hard surface.
  • Dentures must be placed in clean water or a denture cleanser when you are not wearing them. never allow them to dry out.
  • Brush your dentures regularly.
  • Brush your gums, tongue and plaque every day.
  • Consult your dentist if your dentures chip, crack or become loose.
